While there's nothing wrong with sweet and simple engagement photos, some people find themselves wanting something a little more unique or memorable. But how do you go about planning a fun engagement session with unique photos ?
Well, you could start with things you two enjoy. Perhaps you like to hunt together, like Connor and Julia:
Every engagement session includes an outfit change, so in true Wisconsin fasion, these two lovebirds decided to toss on some camo gear and highlight one of the many ways they enjoy spending time together. And, boy, was this session magical! Honestly, the hunting portion of this shoot was my favorite.
I always try to encourage my clients to choose something fun and unique to their story when it comes to planning an e-sesh. Not just because I enjoy these types of sessions more...but because it becomes more meaningful to you, the client!
Another example, you could choose a fun mini golf/putt-putt date for your engagement session:
Tanya and Spencer are actually friends of mine and answered my model call for this fun styled shoot. We went over to Crystal Caves in Spring Valley, WI and took advantage of their fun dinosaur mini golf. *They even play the Jurassic Park soundtrack!
Or how about a picnic in the park:
Seriously, how cute are these two?? I love that Sabrina brought along this gorgeous Jane Austen book, too!! Picnics can be pretty versatile. You can bring any kind of gorgeous charcuterie, or favorite junk food, and pack it in whatever basket or bag fits your vibe.
For example...how about a pizza & beer picnic:
Another model call, these two cuties got a fun date night out and got to enjoy some beer and pizza for this session. Seeeeee.....good things come to those who answer model calls! Basically a free date night. How could you go wrong??
Or maybe you just like to be outdoors together/have a favorite park you spend time at:
This one was actually a really fun photo swap with another photographer. We (my husband and I) met up with Erin and Ben at Custer State Park in South Dakota. Love this look? You can get similar looking photos right here in Wisconsin! Devil's Lake in Wisconsin has similar rocky outcroppings and landscape. Although, let's be real, I'd love to head out to SD again!
Still having a hard time deciding? Ask yourself these questions:
"Can I utilize a location that is special to us?" i.e. where you met, where you had your first date, where you got engaged, somewhere that you two spend a lot of time together or a place that holds special memories.
"What are some things we enjoy doing together?" Maybe you like to cook together. You could do a fun cooking session in your home. Or perhaps you enjoy gaming together. You could go to an arcade. Maybe you have a hobby farm and want photos around the farm. Or perhaps you like to fish, or hike..or camp. The options are endless!
"What kind of vibe do I want out of these photos?" Knowing how you want your photos to look will also help determine what you do for your engagement session. You want serious, model-like, Vogue type photos? I probably wouldn't go with the arcade. Now playful and fun photos? Yeah, arcade is perfect. Maybe you want more of a rustic or country vibe. Somewhere with a barn or big open fields may be nice. You get the idea.
"Is there anything we've been dying to try together?" Maybe you always wanted to go rent a paddle boat for a cute date night. Well...perfect photo idea, right there! Or maybe you've had that outdoor projector sitting in your Amazon cart for a while....hit purchase and let's do a fun in-home date night session!
